Yes, Krishnamacharya and Jois developed the Ashtanga series from the old texts. They did a lot of adapting. Krishnamacharya, along with Jois and Krishnamacharya's brother-in -law B.K.S. Iyengar, have been influential on modern day hatha yoga.

Do you realize who Pattabhi Jois is? He studied with Krishnamacharya (please check out that clip) who revitalized the Hatha yoga tradition in the early 1900's. Pattabhi Jois studied under him and created the Ashtanga series (please correct me if I am wrong). If YOU do yoga...it is because of men like Pattabhi Jois!!!

It's a good point that you brought up, but Ashtanga has to be explained somehow, right? The whole system of Ashtanga is more than just the asanas. It includes breathing and meditating as well. Besides, Pattabhi Jois is over 90 years old, and he doesn't do the asanas like he used to. He did his practice for decades, so you would think he could use the rest. But he still practices pranayama breathing.

That's what your teacher might tell you because that's what they also have been taught "yoga is about the breathing". Breathing of course makes this exercise, like any exercise much more efficient and modern day "yoga" practitioners of course perform this very well. Your teachers will also tell you that yoga is thousands of years old but not this stuff. How many of Patanjalis Yoga Sutras even mention asana ?

cspace1234n, why don't you think this is yoga? The difference between gymnastics and yoga is that yoga is about the breath. Each pose is controlled by the breathing, and poses are entered and exited according to the breath. I can't hear the audio on this video very well, so I can judge whether the 2 students are doing their poses according to the breath or not. There is nothing spiritual or supernatural about yoga. The "enlightenment" comes from controlling the body with the breath.

Can't say I have ever considered what I do as honorable or that I am true to anything, I just don't get where anybody at all sees this excellent form of exercise as anything other than physical. Surely you don't have to be a rocket scientist to realise this yet people manage to convince themselves it is "spiritual" but then these days every second person seems to be "enlightened". Judas "got it" as you suggest, he just had his eye on something else, otherwise why did he have such regret ?

Interesting point but what you must understand that this is not yoga, this is gymnastics masquerading as yoga. And before anyone slags off what I write you should also understand that I have owned and run Astanga yoga schools for many years, I have worked with Patthabi Jois in Mysore and BKS Iyengar in Pune but I don't for a minute pretend that this is anything else other than physical exercise. Needless to suggest I am not so popular with many teachers in the "yoga" world !

In U.S., Yoga teachers need to pay rent for the space, liability insurance, professional fees, continuing ed, to feed themselves and pay their own personal expenses.. this adds up.. ...in other ctrys communities support the local spiritual comm. After witnessing the health care debate in U.S., I've found it is unrealistic to expect this in this in this society... we all live in the same economic, litigious, societal conditions, including yoga teachers...

If you had something spiritually awesome to give you would not invite the world to come for free and take it. You would end up with a million lunatics looking for instant cures for athletes foot, dandruff, and yeast infections. Good yoga courses, like good music lessons, or art lessons, are expensive because the person who is offering their service needs to live, support their family, EAT, and also take breaks themselves from helping people. I have had that fear for doing my Ashtanga practice for a long time and it mae me stop my practice, and now I began practicing in my own pace. If you can relax and not be afraid your mind will keep cool and you will be able to follow your breath. You begin wherever you are and don't even think about progressing, you will progress amazingly well if you stop worrying about doing it like the super-flexible person on the next mat. Just enjoy your own stage and have a good breath and enjoy the ride.

It's just not right that people who are perfectionists by nature or a bit nevrotic or manic in thought etc. should be afraid of practicing because they need to do it perfectly.

Nice to see us (we are Eleni & Joanna: 2nd & 3rd person on the left). Reminds us of our excellent practice with the sweetest Guru. Tough practice, soft heart, clear mind. A feeling of Santosha (satisfaction) was conveyed. Thanks Mr Yogabasics for posting. Made us start our own channel so that our Yoga Arts members get the same happy surprise when seeing themselves on the tube!
